NIH Announced Formal Designation of Sexual and Gender Minorities as Health Disparity Population
On October 6, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced the formal designation of sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) as a health disparity population for NIH research. The designation builds on the 2011 IOM report The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Better Understanding.

Health and Incarceration - A Workshop Summary
The National Research Council and the IOM held a workshop to discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving health and health care of incarcerated populations. Monitoring HIV/AIDS Care: New IOM Report

A new report from the Institute of Medicine concludes that with enhancements, the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP) can be used to obtain data from a nationally representative sample of people with HIV in order to monitor the ACA’s effect on their access to and use of care.

Monitoring HIV Care to Improve Patients’ Outcomes – IOM Report Releases March 15
Released: 3/9/2012
The National HIV/AIDS Strategy issued by the White House Office of National AIDS Policy along with provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act aim to optimize health care and outcomes for the 1.2 million Americans living with HIV/AIDS. Monitoring HIV Care in the United States: Indicators and Data Systems, a new report from the Institute of Medicine, identifies reliable ways to measure and track the impact of these policies on health outcomes for people with HIV/AIDS. It also discusses the balance necessary between protecting patients’ privacy and ensuring that appropriate health information is securely exchanged between clinical care and support programs that serve this population.
